Bee meadow at the Balster farm in Selm

This bee meadow would not exist without the following SPONSORS

Overview of all sponsors for Balster's Bee Meadow 2026. Thanks to this support, a valuable wildflower meadow for bees, butterflies, and other insects is being created here.

We are therefore prepared, as we have done in the past two years, to convert a portion of our farmland into a Wildflower Meadow to sow for those animals in the spring. For 50€/year let's convert 100 square meters of farmland into an extensive flowering meadow. Of course, during this time no crop protection measures take place and also no fertilizers distributed. We have before sowing the mixture on two different areas. You can as Private individual or, for example, as School class, daycare center, or company a Sponsorship take over.

Since it is meant to be a space for nature,l, we would like to Prohibit walking on the flowers and picking them under any circumstances, otherwise the actual purpose won't be fulfilled. We have a beautiful Picnic Area with two benches and tables fhas been set up for you. There, you can have breakfast, have a picnic, or simply enjoy nature. Have a wonderful day—perhaps followed by a walk in the nearby Nordkirchen Castle and enjoy the bestIreland with a difference. As a sponsor, you’ll by name to a list, which is set up at the edge of the field, but of courseonly if you wish to do soen.

A Successful Flowering Meadow

In recent years, the campaign has been a great success. Between 125 and 150 sponsorships could be awarded in each case. This resulted in valuable habitats for numerous animal species.

Wild and honeybees, bumblebees, butterflies, hummingbird hawk-moths, and various bird species such as the European goldfinch, blue tit, great tit, and long-tailed tit found and still find an ideal habitat. Even increasingly rare animals such as European hareCopper pheasant settled on the meadow, as did the deer, the hen harrier, andthe Rotmilan we were able to observe several times. For the Bats did we also special the seed mix Night-blooming flower mixed in.

Following that did we have a brand new variant of the wildflower meadow for us as Attempt recognized. We left this wildflower meadow in 2021 untouched. That means, no-till farming, which leads to renewed fuel consumption, no tillage, where microorganisms and earthworms againworms are injured or killed. All in the hope that only the seeds sown from the previous year will grow anewone and the „white goosefoot“ remains suppressed. Certainly this meadow was in the first months of spring memorable for many observers! The old stems of the weed shaped the appearance for a long time, until the wind eventually knocked them down anyway.

But: This area was and is pure natureOf course there was also a nettle in the mix and maybe not every plant from the previous year came back, but – and this is what we are really proud of: we have again wild animals, like we never thought possible again! Back when we were kids, we had about 30 to 40 pheasants just around our farm alone. Over the last few decades, the population dropped to almost zero; maybe you'd spot a single rooster, but offspring? No, there simply weren't any anymore. Whenever there was a clutch of eggs, some predators like the crow would quickly discover it and destroy that precious clutch.

Because we did not till the soil at all and, due to the tall stalks and old plants, we created an incredibly dense shelter were able to offer, birds of prey and crows as well as the fox had a hard time finding animals here across the large area. In addition, the rich food supply offered optimal conditions for the Regeneration of the pheasant population. Estimated 20 pheasants can now be seen around the yard again. In addition, small weasels sighted, many Deer and their fawns. Even a Partridge has been heard. These are animals that can be seen plainly. We can imagine that it will be similar with the insect population. Therefore, we are really glad that for many areas it apparently is not too late yet!

New sponsorship for the bee meadow 2026

Where and how has the area been cultivated or newly created? As one or the other sponsor may have seen, our bee meadow looks different every year. In the first year (2019) did we have optimal sowing conditions for our colorful, native wildflower area.

We had 1.65 ha a beautiful magnificent colorful mixture of plants, which also bloomed at different times. As a result, insects and wildlife had a food supply over a long period of time to sustain themselves and their offspring.

In the Year 2020 we didn't measure the area until Spring: Edited, because many insects have laid their eggs in the plants. In order not to destroy them, the timing was, as I said, pushed as far as possible into the late spring postponed. Unfortunately, the sowing took place under extremely dry conditions instead, and the first rain for the seeds to germinate was a long time coming. As a result, the „white goosefoot“ could establish itself with its deep roots as a native weed. Since it comprehensively and very strongly suppressed the initial sowing even in the early phase, we have the sowed the entire area again. Unfortunately only with limited success, since the seeds are widely distributed in the soil. As a result, the second planting—with nearly 60 different plants—didn’t go as well as hoped. At least not at first glance. Nevertheless, even this plant draws nutrients from the soil and provides food primarily for pheasants, hares, roe deer, etc. Cover against birds of prey from the air. In addition, we found that the „white goosefoot“ has only grown where the soil has been tilled.
